Title 1
Welcome to the Title 1 Reading Department
Curriculum overview/special curriculum: Guided Reading in K-5 classrooms using the Balanced Literacy Approach, based on research by Fountas/Pinnell. We also implement Leveled Literacy Intervention with some students. We work closely with classroom teachers on improving at-risk student’s reading levels.
Student and parent expectations: Parents should make sure their children read daily. In K-2 students should bring home books from the classroom to be read daily, with older students reading at least 20-30 minutes each day. Materials for reading may vary from library books to guided reading books, which, as mentioned previously, they will receive from their classroom teacher and/or Reading Facilitator.
Procedures: Initial testing and Spring EOG scores determine placement of students into the guided reading groups according to their level of reading proficiency. Mid-year testing shows on-going progress. End-of-year testing reflects growth and provides necessary data for the following year.
Activities: Our activities are built around the Balanced literacy framework and include 3 domains: decoding skills, comprehension, and fluency.
Testing: All students, K-5 will be assessed using the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment kit, as well as daily informal running records.
