Spring 2010 Jump Rope Competition
The first jump rope competition of the year was a great success! We had 26 students participate in the competition. Each student had to qualify for the competition by signing the "Jump King" poster in PE class during the jump rope unit. The "Jump King" poster was a way to assess the students' ability to jump 50 times in a row with a mistake and they were required to do a single hop jump (jump, jump, etc.).
Each student present at the competition could be considered the best in the school, but the competition was designed to see who the very best was. And did we find out!
The competition was divided into three skills: double hop, single hop, and any jump or combination of jumps as long as they did not stop. As the student made a mistake that caused their jump to stop they sat down. The last five students were awarded points each round (5th place=1pt., 4th=2pts., 3rd=3pts., 2nd=4pts., and 1st=5pts). Students got a 90 second water break between each round. We did three rounds per skill except for the continuous any jump which we did only two rounds.
The final round decided the top three outcome. Going into the round the first and second place contestants were firm to finish in that order but the third place was up for grabs. One student had 15 points going into the last round and another had 11 points. The 15 point student made a mistake early and did not get any points, but the 11 point student pushed hard and got first place which gave them five points and they secured the third place overall with 16 points.
Every student that came was given a free jump rope for participating. The top three winners got free t-shirts from American Eagle that said "Fit Happens".
Thank you for all the parents that came to support their child! I know it meant a great deal for the students to have their loved ones cheering for them.
Congratulations to our winners:
First place: Destinee Goldston (Fifth grade)
Second place: Alejandra Joachin (Fifth grade)
Third place: Kevin Rosales (Second grade)
