Physical Education

My name is Matthew Larson and I am the PE teacher for your child at Balfour. I graduated from UNCG in 2009 with a Bachelor's of Science in Physical Education and immediately gained my teaching licensure for Physical Education grades K-12.

I am a strong believer in making PE fun and enjoyable for your child so they will have positive physical activity experiences as they grow. I have found when these experiences are not fun the student develops a bad attitude towards physical activity and thus will be less likely to engage in such activities as they grow. With the country's growing obesity problem, especially arising in the younger children earlier and earlier, it is important to have your child experience positive physical activity.

The program I offer is both skill and health/fitness oriented. I believe in developing motor skills the students can use in everyday play and organized sports. All students will receive the same skill development as they move through Balfour, with the K-1 being geared towards movement and body control skills and grades 2-5 being more focused on specific skills to develop for sporting activities. I am a fitness oriented individual and I believe my students should know the basics about staying healthy (eating right, exercising, and taking care of their bodies). This is why I incorporate lots of health and fitness lessons into my year-long curriculum ranging from brushing your teeth (kindergarten) to knowing how the heart functions and benefits of not smoking (2-5).

I am looking forward to teaching your child the benefits and excitement that can be had in physical activity. I hope that you encourage your children to play, exercise, and eat healthy because there is only so much I can do without your help at home.

Thank you. Look for weekly updates on what your child is doing and learning in PE :)
