Art
Welcome to the Balfour Art Palette
“The job of the artist is to always deepen the mystery” Francis Bacon
Balfour Elementary is home to many creative student artists who meet weekly to work hard and have fun creating masterpieces that we are excited to share with you.
Curriculum
The art curriculum at Balfour is disciplined based, meaning that it combines the four major disciplines of art: Art production (learning to make art), Aesthetics (using art vocabulary to talk about art and it’s purposes), Art criticism (evaluating artwork), and Art history (our cultural heritage). All projects are aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Art Education and the curriculum is based on the National Art Standards which provide us with six areas of student learning, including:
1. The creative use of art media, techniques, and processes
2. How to use the elements and principles of art (line, shape, color, texture, form, space, and pattern)
3. How artists choose subject matter, symbols, and ideas for artwork
4. Historical and cultural aspects of artwork
5. How to evaluate our artwork and the work of others
6. How art is connected to other disciplines
Art lessons are also connected to themes, ideas, and skills taught in the classrooms. This approach helps students to find connections throughout society.
Meet the Teachers
“Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself.”Chinese Proverb
Ms. Gwen Auman
Ms. Auman has been with Asheboro City Schools since 1986. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art education from UNC-G. Her hobbies include making pottery and writing songs.
“Art By Me”
“Art By Me” is an annual fund raiser for the art program at Balfour. Each student’s art work is reproduced onto a preview magnet, which can be purchased for $5.00. Students also have the opportunity to order various items, such as T-shirts and coffee mugs, with their art work reproduced on the item. Profits from “Art By Me” are used to purchase art supplies for the students at Balfour.
Art Shows
During certain months, some students have their artwork displayed at the Professional Development Center on the Asheboro High School campus, at the Randolph Arts Guild on Sunset Avenue, at the Randolph Public Library Asheboro Branch on Worth Street, and at the State Employees Credit Union on Park Street.
