Rules & Requirements

What is Battle of the Books?
It is a book competition between the five elementary schools of Asheboro City Schools.

Who are the coaches?
Sara Ralph (librarian) and Melanie Golding (5th grade teacher)

Who can participate?
5th grade students chosen by their classroom teacher. Once selected, students and parents are required to sign a contract agreeing to the rules/policies of the team.

How are students chosen for the competition team?
Students will be divided into two teams and will be required to read all six books assigned to their team, but are encouraged to read as many books as possible. Students will be required to write 10 practice questions for each book they read. Six students will be chosen by the coaches for the final team based on how many books read, quality of questions written, meeting attendance and behavior. The students not chosen will compete against each other for the other six spots on the team.

How can students be dismissed from the program?
A student will be dismissed from the program if he/she fails to read the required six books, fails to turn in their questions, misses more than two meetings or due to misbehavior.
 


Dates

When are meetings?
Fridays, after school from 2:30-3:30. Group members must have transportation available. The first meeting will be held in December or January.

When/where is the competition?
The competition will be held during April at one of the district’s five elementary schools. If required, competition team members will be transported from Balfour by bus. Parents are welcome to attend.
